Driver suffers medical emergency, crashes into Spring Hill home

SPRING HILL (FOX 13) - A car crashed right through a home in Hernando County, leaving behind a huge mess and sending the driver to the hospital.

At least two people are counting their blessings - the homeowner and a nearby worker - that this didn't end as badly as it could have.

First, it was a sound that got people's attention. "It was just, you know, a real bang noise," said Jerry Smith, who was doing work a few yards away.

Then, it was a sight they couldn't quite believe. "I [saw] this car was coming so fast that I didn't even get to see the woman that was in there," Smith recalled.

Wednesday, around 8 a.m., a driver came speeding down Northcliffe Boulevard at Commodore Avenue in Spring Hill, crossed the lanes, took out a street sign, and barreled through four yards before crashing into this home.

"I run down there, couldn't find the car nowhere," Smith said. "Well, the car was inside the house. I mean, the car was completely inside the house. I'm surprised it didn't even go into the living room."

Smith tried to free the driver but she was trapped. So, he called 911. "I've never seen nothing like that," Smith said.

According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, it appears the driver suffered a medical issue. She was transported to the hospital.

Miraculously, no one was home at the time.

Family members who stopped by the help clean up said the homeowner had left Wednesday morning for a trip, earlier than usual. Had he been there, he very well could've been in that master bedroom or even on that mattress which took a hard hit. 

He's not the only one counting his blessings.

"I'm lucky I didn't park where I had it because she would've been on top of me," Smith said. "Thank goodness I  didn't. I just hope she's alright."
