Interstate 75 in Manatee County was shut down in both directions just before midnight on Monday and into Tuesday morning after a tanker truck crashed, causing it to overturn and spill approximately 500 gallons of oil on the roadway.

The incident occurred on I-75 near University Parkway at 11:20 p.m. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is assisting Florida Highway Patrol at the scene in Manatee County where the tanker crashed.

Northbound lanes have since reopened. Southbound lanes remain closed. Traffic is being diverted onto State Road 70.

Oil was still actively leaking from the truck onto the roadway Monday morning.

The incident, combined with dense fog in the area makes it increasingly important for drivers to exercise caution on the roads this morning.
