CLEARWATER, Fla. (FOX 13) - Philadelphia fans were buzzing inside Clearwater’s Spectrum Field, thanks to the signing of MLB star Bryce Harper. His new contract is an earth shattering 13-year, $330 million deal, the largest in history.
Harper was not in attendance on Friday, but fans like Steve Thode are still more than happy to celebrate.
“On my 62nd birthday, Bryce Harper signed with the Phillies,” Thode said. “I’m excited! Thirteen years, fantastic -- let’s go!”
Andrew Sardella, 11, changed his tune on the 26-year-old Harper real fast.
“I really hated him when he was with the Nationals but now that he's with Philly, I’m really going to like him,” he said.
The city of Clearwater is also excited to welcome Harper’s star power, and the fans he’ll attract.
“They’re diehard fans and they follow the Phillies, this is just great news for springs to come, for us to have full houses at Spectrum Field,” said Mayor George Cretekos. “It really benefits not only Clearwater, it benefits Pinellas County, it benefits the entire Tampa Bay area."
