ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - A man from Pinellas County was arrested Saturday after police say he slapped a 13-year-old girl, knocking her out in the process.
The mother of the child, Cindy Luciano, said a quick stop for gas suddenly became a nightmare.
"I know it felt like a movie because everything happened in slow motion," Luciano told FOX 13. "I couldn't move, I was in shock."
Deputies say 27-year-old Kolbe Wayne Smith walked into a gas station Saturday afternoon and hit the child in the face for no apparent reason.
"Evil, I'll use the word evil because that's what this is," said Corporal Dan Difrancesco, a spokesman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Several customers stopped Smith from leaving the store until deputies could respond.
"Sometimes people don't get involved," Difrancesco added. "We appreciate those citizens that helped out in this situation."
Initially, Smith resisted arrest until deputies were forced to use a Taser to subdue him. He received a small cut on his head from hitting the floor. He was medically cleared, transported, and booked into the Pinellas County Jail.
Smith told deputies that he had no memory of the incident. He also admitted to using the drug LSD.
"And he doesn't remember, but she's going to remember for the rest of her life," exclaimed Luciano.
Smith was charged with one count of aggravated child abuse, violation of probation, felony battery, and resisting arrest.
