Bruises found on a child's legs are at the center of an investigation at a Sarasota County daycare.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is looking into how the baby ended up with the injuries.

The baby's parents say they noticed the bruises last Wednesday and came to Foundations Christian Montessori Academy to find out what happened.

A teacher told them the baby likely hit herself while playing, but the couple later got a call from the school's director, telling them the authorities are now involved.

Sarasota County sheriff's deputies have visited the school. They're trying to figure out if a teacher caused the bruises on the 20-month-old.

The school's director, Heather Angersoll released a statement to FOX 13 News Wednesday, saying:

"The safety and security of our students is our number one priority. We have never had an incident like this. As part of our hiring process, we conduct thorough employment verification and comply with state-mandated level 2 background screenings for all employees. We are fully cooperating with the authorities and our licensing and accrediting agencies. The school is taking all necessary and appropriate steps to address the situation."
