Sarasota shootout caught by surveillance cameras

Surveillance video captured a modern day wild west-style shootout in Sarasota Monday.

“Bullets were flying and guns were being shot and the cars were being driven at a high rate of speed,” said SPD spokesperson Genevieve Judge.

It happened around 3:30 in the afternoon, near 32nd Street and N. Washington in Sarasota.

The roads were congested with drivers when police say a gold Chevy Malibu and a white Toyota Camry chased each other on 32nd and then turned north. People in the cars fired at each other along the way.

“All of a sudden we heard 7-8 popping noises,” said Camille Clemons.

Clemons runs a hair and nail salon near the scene. Bullet holes were found in the walls of a nearby business.

“People walk in and out of our businesses. This is our livelihood. Why jeopardize that or anybody else's lives? That's crazy to me,” she said.

Police think there were two people in each car. Police also think the suspects were involved a shooting an hour earlier, about 10 minutes away in Manatee County.

”This is absolutely priority one right now we want to find out who these people were why they were shooting and figure out what happened,” said Judge.
