School resource officers reminds community 'we are parents too'

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office released a video profiling its school resource deputies, reminding the community, that they’re parents too.

The video showcases different deputies offering reassurance to parents in the community and details about their roles.

“Empower students to make good choices,” one deputy said, “and think about their future.”

“Because we are here to mentor and be positive role models,” another says in the video.

However, that’s not the only title they hold. They explain they are parents too, and have their own investment in protecting school campuses.

“We may put on the uniform everyday but it's important you know we are parents too,” the agency wrote on its Facebook page. “Our kids ride the same bus, we help them with the same homework and we hug them goodbye every morning just like you do.”

The video was posted two weeks after the mass shooting at a Parkland high school, and days after an armed school resource officer faced scrutiny for his response and resigned
