Missing teen kayaker found safe

- Tarpon Springs police and search crews found a missing kayaker at Fred Howard Park overnight.

Police say a grandmother, a mother and her 17-year-old daughter were out kayaking to Anclote Key Sunday, when somehow the teen got separated from the group

The mother called 911 and search crews spent hours searching for her in the dark of night.

"I believe she was in the kayak waving her arms when the Coast Guard helicopter flew over and spotted her," Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Scott Young said. Rescuers said her kayak had been waked by a boat and she lost her paddle. Her kayak drifted for several hours before a helicopter crew flying overhead spotted her.

Rescuers said she was wet and cold, but otherwise okay, as she had water, a life vest and a light on her boat.

The teen, who has yet to be identified, was evaluated. She had signs of mild hypothermia but it remains unclear whether any further medical treatment was needed.

FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
