Suspect dies in custody in Polk County

- Polk County deputies are investigating a death of a suspect who died in custody.

Porfirio Hernandez-Grimaldo, 59, and another man were arrested Sunday morning for fighting outside a bar, Florida Orange Center, in Lakeland.

Deputies say Hernandez-Grimaldo was highly intoxicated.

Hernandez-Grimaldo and the other man were handcuffed and put in the back of a cruiser.

When they arrived at the sheriff’s office, Hernandez-Grimaldo was slumped over and appeared to be sleeping, but when deputies tried to wake him, they discovered he was not breathing.

A death investigation is underway.
