TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - TAMPA (FOX 13) - One person is dead and another is behind bars after two cars collided head-on Saturday night on Westshore Boulevard, bursting into flames upon impact.
Firefighter Scott Wright says it was a race against the clock, trying his best to douse the flames as quick as possible before running out of his water supply. He says the fire was unlike any car fire he's ever encountered.
Sirens could be heard blaring as cell phone video captured the fiery aftermath of the deadly crash.
"This was the worst car fire," Wright said. "I've ever been on."
Wright could be seen nearly disappearing into the flames trying to put out the fire, unloading water from the hose in the midst of the inferno. Pops and cracks could be heard coming from the flames as they worked to get the fire under control.
"Unfortunately, knowing that there is another victim involved you want to get it out as fast as you can," Wright said. "So that's what you're thinking.
24-year-old Nicholas Schreiber is now behind bars after police say the Jeep he was driving northbound on Westshore Boulevard tried to pass another car, hitting several trees and shrubs before crossing over the median and colliding head-on with a Toyota traveling southbound.
The impact from the crash killed Schreiber's passenger and left the driver of the Toyota with minor injuries. Police say Schreiber appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
"He was hysterical," Joe Cruche said. "He just looked like he lost someone. He knew it was a dire situation."
Cruche captured the video of the fire on his cell phone and watched as Wright rushed to douse the flames. He eventually extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes.
"You got things going on all around you," Wright said. "But you can't lose focus on what you are doing. You just can't."
Schreiber is facing multiple charges, including one count of felony vehicular homicide and one count of felony DUI manslaughter. As of Sunday night, he remains in the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.
