Suspicious Package cancels church and causes evacuation

- UPDATE: The suspicious device was determined to be a failed attempt at making a speaker out of a keg. The evacuation orders are being lifted.

Parishioners found a suspicious package at Avon Park Christian Center this morning.

Worshipers showing up for Sunday service found the item and had the youth pastor take a look at it.

He advised the campus to be evacuated while church staff contacted law enforcement.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene and determined that the church should remain evacuated and further evacuated the neighboring apartments while the bomb squad and fire marshal were called to the scene.

The bomb squad is currently on site assessing the package.
