TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Firefighters are trying to figure out what caused an apartment fire that forced a man to jump to safety.
The two-alarm blaze broke out inside a unit on the third floor of the Radius Palms complex on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, just north of USF. Firefighters were able to contain it to that one apartment.
They say the man living there escaped by getting on his balcony, jumping down to a ladder, and then climbing the rest of the way down.
The fire chief says he's fortunate he got out without any serious injuries.
“Being on the third floor, his entranceway to the stairwell was not a route he could take. So he was on the balcony. That’s why he was out there,” explained HCFR Chief Randy Bach.
Firefighters say only one unit was damaged by the fire, but several others suffered water damage. The apartment complex is trying to relocate displaced families to other vacant units.
