Tampa hosts Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism

The state's largest tourism convention kicks off this week in downtown Tampa.

More than a 1,000 people from Florida's resorts, theme parks, hotels, convention centers and advertising agencies are at the Tampa Convention Center for the Florida Governor's Conference on Tourism.

This is Hillsborough County's first time hosting the event. There are nearly 40 guest speakers including Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Storm owner Jeff Vinik. Tuesday, he may speak to the group on his $1 billion development plan for Tampa's Channel District and downtown Tampa.

During the conference, travel experts will discuss trends in the industry and learn how to use social media to their advantage.

Florida has celebrated four consecutive years of tourism growth. More than 97 million people visited the sunshine state last year and tourism experts think this year could be even bigger.

The conference runs through Wednesday.
