Tampa Premium Outlets opens for business

- Expect it to be very busy around Wesley Chapel.  The Tampa Premium Outlets are now open for business.

Off State Road 56, shoppers will find nine buildings connected by covered walkways, plus an indoor food court and a pirate-themed playground for kids.

But it's the stores that everyone wants to know about.  The builders claim 103 retailers, including f 37 name-brand and sporting goods stores, 21 shoes stores and 15 specialty-item stores.

Simon Properties, which owns the outlet mall says the development has already brought hundreds of jobs to the Tampa area.  Construction created as many as 500 temporary jobs and 800 people are employed permanently on both a part-time and full-time basis.

Simon spokesman Les Morris says he expects the outlet mall to drive development in the area near State Road 56 and I-275, potentially encouraging restaurants and hotels to move in nearby.

"We thought that there was a nice hole in the market here and with Tampa's population and the tourist market we thought this would be a great combination," said Morris.

Shoppers say they expect the opening day traffic to prove people are willing to drive to Wesley Chapel to bargain hunt.

"I think it's going to be a wonderful boost for the economy and growth and kind of put this area on the map," said shopper Tamika Johnson.

Tampa Premium Outlets will have special promotions, fireworks and other events all weekend long.
