CLEARWATER, Fla. (FOX 13) - A teenager is in custody after plowing into a Clearwater home with a stolen car.
Pinellas County deputies said the 16-year-old crashed a stolen 2015 Kia Soul into a family’s garage in the 1300 block of Eastfield Drive. No one inside the home as injured. The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators said the driver and his 13-year-old passenger tried to run away from the crash scene but were quickly detained. Both were treated for minor injuries.
Officials said the teen stole another family’s member’s vehicle and lost control of the vehicle along Eastfield Drive. The car first crashed into a mailbox and a parked car before colliding with the home.
“You hear about this on the news, you don’t expect it to happen to you,” explained the homeowner, Mark Smith. “It’s not a cut-through neighborhood.”
Deputies initially said the teen suspect had cut-off his GPS ankle monitor hours before the crime, but they latest clarified that it had legally been removed Thursday. He was, however, still on felony probation.
After the teen was released from the hospital, he was transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center. Officials said the passenger was not arrested, but the driver faces charges of grand theft auto, leaving the scene of a crash and violating probation.
The stolen car has since been towed, and first responders helped patch up the damaged garage door with wood.
