SARASOTA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Two teens have been charged after police said one of their accomplices was accidentally shot during an attempted robbery in Sarasota. One of those teens is also accused of attacking an off-duty officer and homeless man back in February.
"It's frustrating to know that same individual is now involved," said Genevieve Judge with Sarasota police.
Judge said officers responded to a report of a robbery with a firearm at the Bella Sol Apartments just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Officers found four teenage boys at the scene and detained three of them for questioning. The fourth teen, a 15-year-old boy, was airlifted to All Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm.
Police said the wounded teen is also a suspect in the attempted robbery.
Two of the three detained juveniles, ages 15 and 16, were arrested and charged with robbery with a firearm.
According to police records, the 16-year-old boy, Joshua Adderly, had been arrested in February and charged with attacking an off-duty officer and a homeless man at a Sarasota park.
"What's even a little bit more ironic is the officer that was involved in that off-duty incident in February was one of the first individuals to arrive on scene yesterday and to make sure the individuals involved got the proper treatment that was needed," Judge noted.
For residents at Bella Sol, it's unnerving to know what the teens were doing.
"It's kind of scary, you know. I never would have been involved in anything like that at that age. It’s shocking," said Kathryn Rivera.
Rivera said it's even worse knowing at least one of the teens had carried out a violent crime in the past.
"It kind of makes you wonder what they were doing out and about, if they had already been involved in beating up an officer," she added.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Detective Maria Llovio at 941-364-7336. Or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-TIPS, or online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com.
