Someone stole a pair of water scooters from an apartment complex in Tampa in a crime that most people probably wouldn't have noticed even if they witnessed it.

Tampa police released surveillance video Monday of the crime that took place a week earlier.

"Our concern is that it's during the day, the person went in, they saw an opportunity, hooked up the car and then drove away," said Eddie Durkin, a spokesperson for the department.

In the video, the driver can be seen in a white 2007 GMC Savana work van following someone into the Marina Club Condominiums on Tampa Bay Boulevard. According to police, he hitched a trailer carrying two WaveRunner watercraft to the back of his van and left the complex.

The WaveRunners are worth about $33,000.

There are similar trailers and watercraft throughout the complex and detectives are wondering whether the thief came there with a purpose.

"[Detectives] will do a neighborhood survey, see if anybody has seen the subject in the area earlier. Maybe he was casing it," Durkin said.

In a release from CrimeStoppers, investigators said the van has unique running boards, damage to the driver's side and two black bumper stops attached to the rear bumper of the van.
