Mastry's Bar in downtown St. Petersburg was closed Friday following the death of Justin Mastry.

"Justin was the kind of guy, as soon as you walked in the bar you felt his presence," said Jonathan Koshaish, who works nearby.

The 44-year-old was killed Friday morning in what appears to be a freak accident. Pinellas County deputies say a Treasure Island garbage truck driver was backing up near Mastry's home on Bayshore Drive and didn't see him crossing the road.

The huge truck backed over the popular manager of the bar his family owns.

"For this to have happened, it really hurts," said Koshaish.

Mastry was known for being laid back. Friends say he loved fishing and skateboarding when he wasn't working.

"This is devastating to my son. They go fishing all the time. They were best of friends, they were everything," said a friend, Karen Conklin.

A family member of the man behind the wheel of the garbage truck tells FOX 13 he's devastated over what happened. No charges have been filed and the investigation into the accident is on-going.
