A Venice woman has been accused of neglecting more than 30 animals.

Sarasota County deputies say they arrested 64-year-old Elaine Wells at the end of June for suspicion of DUI. At the time, she requested for offers with the county’s animal services to respond to her home and care for her animals.

When they arrived at her home in the 6600 block of Pineapple Place, they said they found 34 exotic birds freely flying around. Officials said several were underweight, had signs of self-mutilation, and didn’t have access to food or water.

Officials also said several were living under deteriorated kitchen cabinets and other were confined in cages. Investigators said they found the home was covered in “dirt, debris and animal waste.” They said there was also flies, mosquitos and roaches throughout the home.

The birds were transported to a veterinarian, along with a 15-year-old Boston terrier. The current conditions were all the animals have not been released.

Deputies said Wells faces additional charges including animal cruelty.
