ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (FOX 13) - A black Mazda is now at the center of an investigation into a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist in St. Petersburg.
Newly-released surveillance video shows what happened before and after the March 7 crash. That afternoon, a man was riding his bicycle across the intersection of 26th Avenue S and 45th Street. Just as the bicyclist crossed into the intersection, an oncoming Mazda CX-7 made a left turn right into his path.
The car hit the bicyclist, who rolled onto the sidewalk on the other side of the intersection. The driver took off.
Tina Grello and another neighbor saw the crash happen. They both called 911.
“I heard the guy say ‘Oh man’ or ‘Oh God’ or ‘Oh something’ and I heard the car hit and then I saw him out of my peripheral vision rolling and coming off the bike and landing there,” Grello remembered.
St. Petersburg police hope someone recognizes the black Mazda CX-7, which may have front-end damage. Anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver is asked to call St. Pete police at 727-893-7780.
