A Sarasota County woman had no idea she was being watched as she worked out.
Early Tuesday morning, Sarasota Deputies said a man peered into the window of her gym.
"He was calculated in what he was doing that morning," said Lt. Mike Dumer.
Surveillance video from the Arium on Palmer Ranch Apartments shows the man looking into the gym.
"It would appear that our suspect was surveilling our victim for a bit before she actually left the gym," Lt. Dumer said.
When the 39-year-old woman left the gym, the man attacked.
Investigators with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said the man grabbed her from behind and pulled her back to the gym door where she struggled to break free.
"Our victim was very steadfast in her own self-defense. She gets him to the ground and fights him off pretty well," said Lt.Dumer.
A hoodie covered the man's face, but detectives said the struggle with his victim may have left him with injuries to his face and hands. They believe that could help lead to an identification.
"We don’t know who this guy was or what he was trying to accomplish," said Dave Carter, a resident who lives in the area.
His condo board is going over their security measures to see what can be done.
"There's not many people around to see or provide help. It causes you to pause and wonder what could we do better to take care of our residents," he said.
There's a bit of unease in the air, as residents like Haley Hays try going about their daily routines.
"I was a little concerned, but I have my dog here to protect me," she said.
With her protector by her side, Haley and others take extra steps to protect themselves and each other.
"I hope they find the guy and I hope she is doing all right. I would hate to have this happen to me. You can only pray and hope that everyone stays safe and aware of their surroundings," she said.
