Two women were in a car that ended up at the bottom of a lake in Largo Friday evening. Police confirmed Saturday, one of those women died from her injuries.

It happened at lake south of East Bay Dr. in the area of 556 Lake Judy Lee Dr.

One of the women, the passenger in the car, was able to get out before the car sank.

The other, 32-year-old Toni Wallace, was rescued by crews from the car Friday night, but died Saturday, police said.

Police said it seems Wallace became unconscious behind the wheel. When she did, her foot pressed the accelerator, sending the car right into the lake. Investigators said they were trying to determine if Wallace had a medical episode, or if alcohol or drugs were involved.

An update Monday morning said their preliminary investigation revealed it was likely that Wallace did in fact have a medical issue while behind the wheel.

Largo Police Lieutenant Stephen Slaughter said the car drove south on Alternate Keen Road, across the media of East Bay Drive, hit a guardrail and then went into the lake.

When fire rescue crews got there, the vehicle was underwater.

Slaughter described the lake as "a long way off the road."
