Woman dies in Tarpon Springs officer-involved shooting

A woman has died in an officer-involved shooting in Tarpon Springs on Friday morning.

Tarpon Springs police say they responded to 442 Riverside Drive just after 10 a.m. after receiving a report that a black female was saying something to the effect of “call the police.”

Two officers approached the woman who pulled out a knife and “aggressively charged” toward the officers, according to a media release. They deployed a Taser, which struck her, but she continued to charge toward them, police say.

One of the officers was backing up and fell as she continued to approach them, Tarpon Springs police say, and an officer fired his gun. At least one bullet struck her and she was transported to Florida Hospital-North Pinellas where she passed away within an hour.

Police have not released her identified, and the officer who fired the gun was placed on paid administrative leave, which is department policy, they say. No other details have been provided.
