Right in the middle of downtown Sarasota, crime scene tape and police detectives drew the attention of business owners and residents Thursday.

Just two blocks away from Main Street, someone walking through an alley discovered a streak of thick blood leading to a severely injured woman.

She was alive, but unconscious.

"It's unknown at this point... if she was living in the area, walking in the area, that’s all part of the investigation right now," said Genevieve Judge with the Sarasota Police Department.

Judge said the woman still has not been identified.  She was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with severe injuries.

"We are asking if anyone was in the area of the 1300 block of 2nd Street, either last night or early this morning, and may have heard or seen something… to give us a call," said Judge.

Tonight, it leaves an uneasy feeling in the area.

"I feel very sad and I’m afraid. Whether they’re people who live around here or have a home here or don’t it’s really sad," said Jenny Walker.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-366-8000 or dial 911.
