Woman who confronts Gov. Scott fact-checked
TAMPA (FOX 13) - Hundreds of thousands have seen the video of a woman confronting Florida Governor Rick Scott in Starbucks, but after the dust settles, do Cara Jennings' accusations against Scott hold up?
The 47-second video, seen by nearly 600,000 people, opens with a bang.
"You cut Medicaid so I couldn't get Obamacare."
Well, not exactly. Gov. Scott never "cut" Medicaid under Obamacare.
But he did - in 2015 - reverse his position that Florida should expand Medicad under Obamacare to cover 800,000 low-income residents.
Yes, her use of the word "cut" is wrong, but her point is made: she was not able to get covered under Obamacare because of Scott's refusal to expand Medicaid.
Cara Jennings - at around 5 p.m. Tuesday - accuses the governor of not caring about working people.
"We got a million jobs," Scott said.
The reply from Jennings:
"A million jobs? Who here has a great job?"
The state says over 1,000,000 private-sector jobs were created between Dec. of 2010 and the end of 2015.
But Scott's talking point has been targeted because economists predicted the state would gain that number anyway, and he once promised to create 700,000 on top of that.
Further, Politifact said in December that 13 percent of jobs that were created are likely lower-wage.
Yes, Scott's right, Florida has added a million jobs, but nationwide, job growth has been strong too.
Jennings also attacks Scott on women's health.
"You stripped women of access to public health care," she said. "Shame on you Rick Scott."
She is referring to Scott's recent signing of HB 1411, that bans clinics that perform abortions from getting state money to help low-income people pay for other services like mammograms.
But there are publicly supported clinics that don't provide abortions, so it's hard to say what impact HB1411 will have.
Scott walks out of the Starbucks encouraging Jennings to be truthful.
"We depend on those services," Jennings fires back. "Rich people like you don't know what to do."
There is one claim she made, near the beginning, FOX 13 News can't quantify.
