Two women were in a car that ended up at the bottom of a lake in Largo Friday evening.

It happened at lake south of East Bay Dr. in the area of 556 Lake Judy Lee Dr.

One of the women, who police said were in their 30s and 40s, managed to get out of the car on her own. The driver was not able to escape, but was rescued by Largo fire rescue crews.

She was said to be in critical condition.

A dive team was on scene, making sure no one else was in the car, which was still submerged in the water.

Largo Police Lieutenant Stephen Slaughter said the car drove south on Alternate Keen Road, across the media of East Bay Drive, hit a guardrail and then went into the lake.

When fire rescue crews got there, the vehicle was underwater.

Slaughter described the lake as "a long way off the road." Why the car ended up in the water was unclear.
