Young manatee in 'cold distress' rescued outside water treatment plant

- A young manatee was rescued and is being treated at The Manatee Hospital at Lowry Park Zoo.

An official with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said five manatees were spotted in the waters outside the River Oaks Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tampa earlier this week.

FWC was able to move four of them into warmer waters, but one juvenile male around two or three-years-old was found at the plant in cold distress, Andy Garrett with the FWC said.

After about three hours, rescuers were able to rescue the young manatee with a net and transport him to Lowry Park Zoo.

The manatees gather in the warm waters outside the treatment plant in the winter to keep warm.
