Navy Veteran from Southern California killed in Las Vegas attack

A U.S. Navy veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan was among those killed in the Las Vegas shooting spree.

Christopher Roybal, 28, was killed Sunday night along with 58 other people.

His wife, Dixie Roybal, was in California at the time of the outdoor music festival and said she received a call around 1 a.m. that her husband had been shot in the chest.

"Where they transferred him, there were only nine beds and there were over 50-plus people," she told FOX 11.

Roybal served in the Navy for a decade and was in Las Vegas with his mother for the concert when the shooting occurred.

"I want to roll up in a ball, crawl into a corner and cry," Dixie Roybal said, who traveled to Las Vegas to take custody of her husband's body.

She didn't find out until Monday. She told FOX 11, "I don't even have words for how bad it is."

Dixie, understandably, is still in shock.

"It's just horrible," she said. "I feel so bad for everyone."

Dixie now has to take Christopher back to Corona for burial.

"I'm not leaving without him," she said. "I definitely want full military honors. He would want that."

She doesn't know what will be next, but she'll remember Christopher's sense of humor she described as "so joyful and happy."

She called him "a goofball" and said "he's like a best friend."

The gunman, identified as 64-year-old retired accountant Stephen Paddock, unleashed a hail of bullets from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on the festival crowd below. The gunman killed himself as authorities stormed his hotel room.

The attack became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history with 59 killed and 527 wounded.

Several other people with ties to Southern California were killed in the attack, including two Manhattan Beach city employees.
