Report: New threat names DC as potential terrorist target

An alleged new threat from ISIS has named Washington, D.C. as a potential target following the terrorist attacks in Paris.

The threat mentions Washington by name and comes in the form of a video that was released Monday on a site used by ISIS to promote its messages. The video warns that countries taking part in Syria air strikes will suffer the same fate as France.

The international news agency Reuters was first to report this new threat.

The authenticity of the video, which first mentions the attacks in Paris and then vows to carry out the same in Washington, has not yet been verified.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said that the video has not directly changed security procedures and the city is always in a heightened state of alert.

On Monday, Bowser discussed crime and policing strategy with U.S. Attorney General and other mayors at a meeting at the Department of Justice.

“Our city is coordinating at the highest level,” said Mayor Bowser. “I had an opportunity today to talk to Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, who assured me that the District of Columbia would have whatever it needs.

“Our chief of police has also since these attacks have happened, has kept me up to date, up to the minute and has been coordinating with federal partners as well. I should say that while we're watching this video, I don't think that federal officials have really authenticated it. And we, like always, are always at a heightened level of security because of our locale.”
