TIJUANA, Mexico (FOX 13) - The most violent city in the world is Tijuana, according to a nonprofit group in Mexico.
The Los Angeles Times reported that five out of the world’s six most violent cities were within Mexico, according to a report by Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice. Cities were ranked based on homicide rates.
In 2018, there were 138 murders per 100,000 residents in Tijuana, which averages to about seven killings were day, the report said. The Times described Tijuana as a place where “local gangs have been battling over a lucrative domestic drug market.”
Acapulco, Mexico was second on the list with 111 killings per 100,000 people. Caracas, Venezuela was third in the rankings with 100 reported killings per 100,000 people.
Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas and Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua were ranked fourth and fifth respectfully. Both cities are in northern Mexico.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Mexico had more cities on the list than any other country.
