Boy, 4, falls into gorilla enclosure at Cincinatti Zoo

A gorilla was killed by Cincinnati Zoo officials Saturday after a child fell into his enclosure.

The child fell into the moat surrounding the gorilla habitat.

Three gorillas were in the outdoor enclosure at the time and two females immediately obeyed commands to come inside.

However, a 17-year-old male gorilla stayed and picked the 4-year-old boy up and dragged him back and forth across his habitat before the zoo's dangerous animal response team shot him.

Officials said that tranquilizers were not an option because of the gorilla's agitated state.

The child remained in the hospital with severe, but not life threatening injuries.
