UT student film on bullying goes to national contest

- They said they are happy their powerful message was well-received.

"The fact that people understood what we were getting at - that means the most." Bianca said.

Moviefest is a competition open to colleges and universities across the country. It's mission is to challenge students to create short films with limited resources.

Participants get a week to write, shoot, and edit the video. The contest is free.

Moviefest began in 2001. Bianca and Anthony's movie "Words" was one of 43 selected for the contest at UT. Winners of the local contests will move on to the national finals. There were four winners from UT, and "Words" was one of them.

A creative film with a powerful message - produced by two University of Tampa students - could change the lives of bullying victims around the country.

Bianca Lopez and Anthony Nicolo were all smiles after becoming one of four University of Tampa winners in the campus Moviefest. Their subject matter was bullying.

"In the film, we show that he is getting text messages that are very nasty messages and we want people to remember even those that are hidden behind a screen," Bianca explained. "They need to be careful about what they are saying."

The five minute video is based on their own life experiences.
"Kind of spreads the awareness that words do hurt. I have been through it. Bianca has. I am sure others have been through it," Anothy added.

Anthony also won for best actor. The contest's goal is to developed the next generation of filmmakers.

"We hope it goes, like world wide," Anthony said.

"Its building upon itself and it is really a cool experience," Bianca said.

It's an experience they hope will have a lasting impact on them and their peers.
