Mom within 2 miles of school wants bus rule changed

FROSTPROOF (FOX 13) - Charissa Calhoun started a petition to change the Florida Administrative Code that says if a student lives within two miles of a school, they are not eligible for school bus service.

Calhoun said she does not have access to a car during the day, so she is forced to walk her 8-year-old daughter to-and-from Frostproof Elementary School every day. When they leave at 6:30 a.m., it's dark.

Much of their walk is along streets with no street lights or sidewalks. She said the one and a half mile walk is too long and dangerous.

Calhoun's petition was created on the evening of Thursday, October 20 and was already approaching 200 signatures Friday afternoon.
