TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Winning Monday's CBI quarterfinals game against Utah Valley, the USF men's basketball team recorded another first for the program: A berth to a postseason tournament's semifinals.
"We have goals and aspirations for more than what we're achieving right now," said Brian Gregory, the Bulls head coach. "As I always talk about, there has to be a process and a progress. This is a very, very good step for us."
In his second season, Gregory has led the Bulls to their first postseason appearance since 2012. During his tenure thus far, USF has doubled its win total from last season, and tripled it from the 2016-2017 season.
"If 24 months ago, you would say that on March 27, we'd be practicing and getting ready for a game and playing a game, I'm not sure anybody would have believed me," said Gregory. "I'm not sure I would have believed myself, but we've made great strides."
It's not the NCAA Tournament or even the NIT, but the experience and success the Bulls are having this postseason, Gregory says, is a building block toward getting into one of the bigger tournaments.
"Any type of experience that you go through and playing in a postseason where if you lose, you're done, or now if you're playing one game to get into a championship series, you can talk about it, you can show film on it, but unless you live through it, there's nothing like it," said Gregory.
Thursday, USF will host Loyola Marymount in the CBI Tournament's version of the final four. The winner will then go on to play a best-of-three series against DePaul or Coastal Carolina.
The Bulls are one win away from tying the team's season record for wins. Thursday would be number 22. They've already set a record for most home wins in a season at 16.
Tipoff against Loyola Marymount is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Yuengling Center.
