Family dog helps save family from fire

- The family dog is being credited with saving the lives of a California family, including a seven-month-old baby.

"Sasha," an eight-month-old pit bull, began barking and banging on the door of a home in Stockton, California just after midnight on Sunday.

"I open it and she runs in and starts barking at me like crazy and I was like, 'OK, this is weird. This is not her,'" said Nana Chaichanhda.

That's when Chaichanhda noticed her cousin's building was on fire in the four-plex she lived in. The woman says she raced into the bedroom to grab her seven-month-old daughter when she saw Sasha already tugging at the baby to get her out.

"She had already had my baby by the diaper and was dragging her off the bed," Chaichanhda said.

Fire crews responded within minutes of the 911 call, but Chaichanhda's home was destroyed, along with her cousin's.

The families are now staying with aunts that also live in the fourplex.

Chaichanhda says she is thankful for her pup's heroic actions and hopes it changes people's views of pit bulls as family pets. "It meant a lot. I owe her everything. If it wasn't for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn," she said.

Chaichanhda said it was one of the rare nights where she left Sasha outside and it likely ended up being the reason everyone made it out alive.
