A man managed to escape his "extremely irate, almost irrational" ex-girlfriend after she confronted him with a gun and said she was going to kill him, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

But deputies who came to the man's call for help were forced to shoot the armed woman, the sheriff said.

During a live press conference Monday, the sheriff said the man was taking a shower in his apartment at Cypress Trace, located in the 3000 block of S Kings Avenue, Monday afternoon when his ex-girlfriend entered the room with a gun.

The sheriff said it appears the man's ex looked at his phone without his permission and became angry. She is accused of threatening to kill the man, but he managed to escape the apartment, scale a 7-foot fence surrounding the complex, and get to the child care center across the street to call 911.

Deputies arrived at Heaven Sent Child Care and were interviewing the man when the woman drove by and began to pull in to the parking lot. The sheriff says deputies on the scene told the woman to stop the vehicle and put away her weapon, which was visible in the vehicle.

When the woman, 39-year-old Terrell Green, would not obey the deputies' commands, one of them fired their weapon at her, hitting her in the upper torso.

Sheriff Chronister said Green had non-life-threatening injuries. He said her record includes three child abuse charges.

"She chose this," Chronister said during the press conference. "She was there today in this parking lot to finish the job that she had started."

Green is being charged with false imprisonment and aggravated assault with a firearm.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The deputy who fired her weapon was identified as Kristina Gautier, who has been with the sheriff's office since 2019. She has no prior incidents of deadly force on her record.

Also on the scene was deputy Michael Castelli, also with the sheriff's office since 2019 and having no prior incidents of deadly force on his record.

Chronister says it is protocol for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to take over the investigation after a deputy is involved in a shooting.
