ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - After a very deadly start to the year, St. Petersburg officers are cracking down on pedestrian safety.
A special operation Monday targeted those jaywalking, as well as motorists who plow through marked crosswalks.
Officers are citing pedestrians and bicyclists who fail to use them and motorists who ignore walkways by not stopping.
Officer Lenard Cox says, so far in 2017, St. Pete has seen three deadly accidents where pedestrians were hit and killed while crossing the road illegally.
Jaywalking is a fine that will cost you $62.50. Officers issued a total of 11 citations Monday along 4th Street N.
Tuesday, police will target 5th Avenue N and other busy roadways.
