TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - At the final buzzer of USF's 76-68 win over UConn Wednesday, the Bulls had already done something that took them all of last season to do: They won 10 games. They also ended a 10-game skid against the Huskies.
"We don't want that to be the only story they're talking about for the rest of the season," said sophomore guard Justin Brown. "We want to keep it going of course. We want to win more games, we want to win all of the games if we can."
The comeback win over UConn is just one of 18 conference games the Bulls will play this season, but it may just be the most important. It gives them actual proof that they can compete with some of the best teams in the NCAA.
"You have to have tangible evidence sometimes," said head coach Brian Gregory. "You know, we've got great guys, but to believe and have faith in what we're doing without any evidence it's going to work is difficult."
Three players returned for Gregory's second season with the Bulls. The rest are freshman and transfers who have quickly bought into the culture that has them sitting at 11-2 in the early going of the season. It's their most wins in five years.
"Coming from the bottom and trying to get to the top, that process is really fun," said junior guard Laquincy Rideau. "A lot of people doubt you and when you shock people, they're like, 'Oh, they won!' But, it's such a great experience."
Next up, USF travels to Tulsa Saturday, where they'll try to go 2-0 in AAC play.
