Pasco sheriff: Child abduction report made up

The sheriff's office says this shirt was found at the location where the alleged incident was reported. It was not clear who found the shirt.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office says a reported child abduction has been determined to be unfounded. They say it was made up by a young girl.

Pasco County officials say a girl found a small, pink shirt and then made up the story about an abduction.

They say she told an 11-year-old friend about the fake abduction. The 11-year-old told an adult, launching an investigation into the incident.

The reported kidnapping was in New Port Richey around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff's office says it received a report that a man driving a van got out and grabbed a girl.

They say it turns out a child made up the story. Pasco officials were working with the child's parents to resolve the issue.

There can be charges for making a false report, but Pasco officials said they hoped to resolve the issue without filing charges.
