Spook Hill added to National Register of Historic Places

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Spook Hill, a gravity-defying phenomenon in Lake Wales, has become a historic attraction now that it has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. 

City officials announced during a recent meeting that Spook Hill has joined the list of historic places in America. City Manager Kenneth Fields requested money to fund a historic marker for the hill where vehicles appear to roll uphill while sitting in neutral.

For decades, it has been a roadside attraction, and it’s not only entertaining to experience, but it’s also free. Its addition to the National Register of Historic Places means it is worthy of preserving.

Spook Hill is located along 5th Street, off of Burns Avenue near Spook Hill Elementary School. It’s a quick detour if you’re heading to other attractions such as Bok Tower or Legoland.

All you need to do is find the white line painted across the road. Place your vehicle in neutral at the bottom of the hill, then, you will slowly roll uphill -- at least that appears to be the case. The theory is it’s all an optical illusion.
