The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery fatal crash that happened on I-75 in Riverview early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. on I-75 near the US 301 exit. FHP said there were actually two crashes that happened moments after each other.

Investigators believe the initial crash was caused by 32-year-old George Evans III, who stopped his truck on the highway for unknown reasons.

"There was calls previously on this truck, driving slow, well under the speed limit, stopping inadvertently for whatever reason," said Trooper Ronald Drake with Florida Highway Patrol.

The pickup was struck from behind by a Buick sedan whose driver was unable to see the stopped truck.

FHP said a good Samaritan had pulled over on the highway to assist after the initial crash. That's when an oncoming Toyota Camry crashed into the scene, killing the good Samaritan and causing one vehicle to burst into flames.

The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Wesley Weysham Jr. FOX 13 has learned that he was a retired firefighter from Sarasota County.

"This gentleman gave his life for the public, being a firefighter. In his heart he was trying to do the right thing, he came out, and it's just unfortunate," said Drake.

Investigators believe that Evans was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He suffered only minor injuries.

The driver of the Buick was seriously injured, while the driver of the Toyota had minor injuries.

The southbound lanes were shut down while troopers investigated, but they have since reopened.
