SARASOTA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Witnesses of an accident involving a father, three young boys, a bicycle, and a makeshift wagon said they had a bad feeling when they saw the contraption being pulled down busy U.S. 301 in Sarasota Thursday.
Two of the boys were airlifted to the hospital after they were thrown from what appears to be a wicker chair with wheels affixed to the bottom. Sarasota police said the wheeled cart hit the curb, sending the boys flying through the air and onto the pavement.
They were not wearing helmets, according to Sarasota police.
Customers and workers at the Hob Nob Drive-In saw the wreck happen. Server Carley Huneycutt says she had a bad feeling when she saw the man pedaling down the street.
“He was going pretty fast and they weren’t wearing helmets,” she said. “They were probably five-feet up in the air before they hit the ground.”
Huneycutt has some medical training, and says she immediately ran over to help.
“The scary part was the traffic. We didn’t know if they got hit by a car, you know, they were laying there with the cars going by, so we were scared,” she said.
Police say the oldest child wasn’t hurt, but his 5-year-old and 3-year-old brothers were.
“The little boy had a gash on the back of his head, it was pretty deep,” said Huneycutt. “Dad was really panicked; he didn’t know what to do. I am an LPN. I asked him to take his shirt off and apply pressure to the head. The older little boy, he only had a couple cuts and bruises."
The youngest two boys were flown to the hospital. They are expected to be OK.
Police are still investigating the accident, but do not expect the father to face any charges.
