Widow testifies against husband's alleged killer

- Jurors were shown surveillance video Wednesday of an alleged robbery-gone-wrong, which left a wife without a husband.

Bonnie Beson never imagined a trip to the gas station would change her life forever. She and her husband, Michael Beson lived in Michigan but had a second home in Plant City.

Back in April of 2016, they stopped at a gas station to fill up. That's when they became the victims of a violent robbery, according to prosecutors.

Defendant Xavier Smith and his friend Al’Kwaun Dixon were apparently looking for someone to rob, according to investigators. Surveillance video from the gas station shows one of the men approach Michael Beson as he pumped gas.

Simultaneously, prosecutors say, Dixon goes to the passenger side of the car to rob Bonnie.

"He said, 'Give me your purse,'" Bonnie told the courtroom. "I said, 'I'm not giving you my purse.'"

The video shows Michael Beson get into the driver’s side of the car to help his wife.

"I'm looking at the passenger side, at the shooter that has a gun on me, and I was looking right as his face when he pulled the trigger and he killed him," Bonnie recalled through tears.

After the shooting the, the video shows the two defendants take off as Bonnie runs to her husband’s side.

"I ran out of the car and I went over to my husband. He was laying on the ground in a huge pool of blood and I knew there was nothing I could do," Bonnie sobbed.

But Smith’s attorneys told the jury he was not the shooter, but Dixon was. They say Smith's only intent that night was to rob someone.

Smith is facing first-degree murder charges and armed robbery.
