13-year-old killed in hit-and-run accident

- A family is grieving the loss of their 13-year-old son who was hit and killed by a pickup truck early Sunday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident happened just before 1:00 a.m. on State Road 574 in Dover.

According to a release, an unknown driver in a Ford F-250 crossed the center lane and struck the child, Jesus Navarro, who was walking on the shoulder towards Mott Road.

Jesus Navarro and Rosa Lopez, the boy's parents, tell Fox 13 they are heartbroken and cannot believe the driver didn't pull over to help their son.

A group gathered at their home Sunday evening to support them as they mourn their son.

"He was goofy fun loving middle schooler," said Vicky Kummelman who is the assistant principal at Turkey Creek Middle School, where Navarro was a student.

The truck is described as a 2012-2016 model Ford F-250 with left headlight and left front fender damage.
