Kids get free haircuts for back-to-school

A fresh start to a new school year deserves a fresh cut and some local barber shops giving kids a fresh look for free.

Chris Piris is clipping away at Chris P Cuts Barbershop in Sarasota.

Every year, he sets aside a day of free haircuts for students going back to school.

"This is a good way to help out the community take a little load off of families even if it just through a haircut," Piris said. "That haircut makes a difference. Starting fresh, starting clean."

Piris said he looks forward to this day every year.

"It's one of those things for me, like Thanksgiving. When it comes around, I'm already preparing because that's something that we look forward to," he told FOX 13 News.

Tampa's Hair Cuttery Hair Salon is also joining in. They're hosting Share-A-Haircut from August 1 through 15.

For every haircut purchased for a child up to age 18, one free haircut certificate is donated to a needy child.

"It's an awesome opportunity for us to give back to our community," said Manager Beth Herter. "This year we want to raise 15,000 haircuts. That's our goal."

Chris P Cuts Barbershop in Sarasota will be giving away free haircuts Saturday, August 13 and the Hair Cuttery program ends August 15.
