A Hernando County mother, whose baby died after being left inside a hot car, is in jail tonight.

Cami Lee Moyer, 38, was arrested on third-degree murder and child neglect charges Friday.

Nearly two months after his death, many questions remain about what happened in that baby's last hours.

The memorial for 9-month-old Keyton O'Callaghan remains on the corner near where he died.

As the state attorney's office decides whether his mother will face formal charges, a pile of items sits by the curb outside their home on Elgin Boulevard - children's toys, tricycles, and a baby pool are reminders of the family that last lived there.

“I walk past that house every day. It’s not nice to see,” a neighbor, who did not want to be identified said.

She wonders, daily, how 9-month-old Keyton O'Callaghan could've been saved.

“It's mind-boggling. It's heartbreaking. It's beyond sad,” she said.

The morning of August 17, Keyton's father, Eric O'Callaghan discovered the baby unresponsive inside a car in Cami’s driveway.

O'Callaghan did CPR until paramedics arrived but Keyton was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“We don't know at this time how long the infant had been in the vehicle,” Hernando County Sheriff's Office representative Denise Moloney said.

Nearly two months later, the questions remain: What was Moyer doing while the infant was alone, in the car and for how long?

“It wasn't all night, I’ll tell you that!” Moyer said at a vigil for her baby.

When Moyer showed up at the vigil for Keyton, she claimed there was more to the story.

“I loved him more than anything in this world!” she said. “They don't know the truth. I am a good person.”

Whatever story detectives ultimately believed to be true, it was enough to put Moyer behind bars.

According to the arrest affidavit, she was already in the Hernando County Jail, on a violation of probation charge October 9, when she was arrested on a warrant for third-degree murder, neglect of a child causing great bodily harm, and child neglect.

She is to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.
