Elderly woman critically injured in Publix parking lot

An elderly woman was critically injured on Sunday in the parking lot of a Publix in Dunedin.

The backstory:

Deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office responded to 1491 Main Street around 3 p.m.

According to investigators, a 71-year-old woman was driving through the Publix parking lot when she put her vehicle in reverse to allow another vehicle to exit the lane. As she was backing up, she hit Carol Spezzano, 83, who was pushing her shopping cart through the crosswalk.

Spezzano was thrown to the ground and struck her head on the pavement. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.
