TEMPLE TERRACE (FOX 13) - During lunchtime at Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, some of the food being served isn't going to students.
The kids are taking some of the cafeteria scraps to a bin outside. The bin is full of composting worms.
"We're taking pizza crusts and bagels and coffee grounds and all of these things that are filling up landfills and breaking them down and returning them right back to the soil," said teacher Travis Malloy.
This is part of a project by the school that merges agriculture with art.
"We have Florida agriculture depicted on the walls," said teacher Kerri Ladd.
The funding was provided by a grant from Fuel Up To Play 60, a nutrition and physical activity program encouraging kids to lead healthier lives.
"They can learn the life cycle of the plant here and in the garden, they can learn about the dairy industry through our beautiful cow and then also tours of dairy farms that are close to us," said Ladd.
And there's also play time.
"It's been fun because we've been able to do a lot more activities and learn a lot about nature and farming," said student Jeremy Clemner.
"The kids have become a family who lift each other up through agriculture, through art and through sports," said Ladd.
