ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - The man suspected of stealing from Bay Area gyms have been arrested, police say.
St. Petersburg police arrested 28-year-old Cody Heilig. Within the last two weeks, they say, there have been several incidents where a man entered gyms and stole car keys from locker rooms.
"I think it's disgusting, personally in my life. Theft is not tolerable in anyway shape or form," commented gym manager Robert Coburn.
Coburn says it appears Heilig would buy day passes for the gym, avoiding any sort of monthly membership or sign-up.
Once he had the keys, police say Heilig would get into cars and steal things like credit cards, which he would then use to buy gift cards and clothing, police say.
Other agencies, including Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Largo police and Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies reported similar crimes in their jurisdictions.
Police say Heilig was identified as the suspect and arrested him on Wednesday. They say his crimes were fueled by drug addiction.
He faces several charges for the crimes within St. Petersburg including auto burglary, grand theft, and felon in possession of a firearm. He may be charged in the additional cases.
