That honeymoon didn’t last long: Two Polk County residents were arrested on domestic violence charges over the weekend, just hours after getting married at the beach.

According to Clearwater police, Daniel Gillen and Gegee Riposta of Davenport were married along Clearwater Beach on Sunday.  But Gillen later told officers the pair had been drinking and arguing throughout the day, then their dispute turned physical.

He said that his new wife came into their hotel room and scratched him on the chest. But she said that her new husband had grabbed her by the neck and shoved her to the ground.

Gillen, 61, and Riposta, 49, were both taken to the Pinellas County Jail on domestic battery charges.

“I’d probably say that’s quite bizarre. I don’t think we have too many calls where you get into a domestic situation on your wedding day,” CPD spokesman Rob Shaw offered.  “It’s not exactly a good start to your marriage.”
